Testing & prototypes validation

RENMARINAS platforms offer several possibilities: design tests and optimisation of scale models, validation of models and adjustments, use of modelling software tools and testing under real conditions.

The marine hydraulics laboratory, located in the port of Arinaga, is an ideal facility for testing physical scale models of floating platforms.

The wave tank has wave generation and absorption systems that replicate marine conditions in a controlled situation, allowing prototypes to be tested under extreme wave and wind resource conditions over periods of 50 years.

These infrastructures together with the use of numerical modelling software tools are vital, as they allow basic research tests on the behaviour of fluids, structures and devices, the calibration and validation of all types of numerical models, as well as the performance of specific design and optimisation tests on floating marine structures.

The marine hydraulics laboratory enables the possibility of first validating the solution adopted in accordance with the conditions of the Canary Islands resource and, subsequently, once the prototype has been validated and adjusted in accordance with the indications of the study, the system could be tested in real conditions in the off-shore test areas which are located in the Port of Arinaga and in the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas.

In this way, developers interested in installing in the Canary Islands would be able to validate their prototypes at the same site where they are installing. This is a very important aspect, since even during the construction phase it is often necessary to test the system under controlled conditions. Furthermore, there are few infrastructures of this type in the world that are used specifically for testing marine renewable energies.
